Through the growth of organisms and other processes in the aquarium, minerals are consumed and must therefore be supplemented regularly. These include, in particular, the necessary elements calcium, magnesium and strontium, as well as alkalinity for the growth of calcium carbonate skeletons in stony corals, lime red algae and other reef organisms.
