Queen Angel (Holocanthus ciliaris)
Maximum size:
45cm, rarely seen above 30cm
Minimum aquarium size when adult:
600+ litres
Difficulty:
Easy-moderate
Reef safe: No, even when small will nip at corals, generally safe with Shrimp, crabs and snails.
Compatibility: Don't keep with other large angels, but should mix ok with other fish of a similar size. Like many large angels can become aggressive to newcomers once established. We’d recommend adding this fish last.
Other information.
Occurs in the Caribbean, small specimens seem to travel and settle better, we don’t get Queen Angels above 20cm for this reason. Juvenile Queen Angels have three to four white vertical bars on the body. When small can be confused with the Blue Queen Angel (Holocanthus bermudensis), this are less colourful when adult. True Queen Angels are more blue and have a spot on their head, this is usually present from around 7cm.
