Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus)
Maximum size:
15-20cm
Suggested minimum aquarium size when adult:
350 litres
Difficulty:
Moderate-difficult
Feeding:
Despite having a reputation for not eating, all the Moorish Idols we get feed well and can be quite greedy. Will eat frozen Mysis, Brineshrimp and Cockle, will take flake food once settled.
Reef safe:
Not recommended, highly likely to nip at hard and soft corals. Safe with Shrimps, Crabs, Snails etc, provided they are not too small
Compatibility:
Usually peaceful with similarly sized fish, avoid keeping with any fish that may pick on it, if bulled may stop feeding and it will be very difficult to get to feed again. Best to keep just one Moorish Idol to an aquarium, although often found in pairs or shoals in the wild.
Other information.
Stunning fish when settled has very long, quick growing dorsal streamer. Requires a high standard of water quality, not recommended for beginners. Likes plenty of water movement and swimming space, with some hiding places.
