Diamond Sterlets require a large pond, of at least several thousand gallons, due to their large adult size, typically 120cm + and quick growth rate.

Like all Sterlets, they can be sensitive to poor water conditions, so require water that is of a very high quality e.g. no ammonia or nitrite and low in nitrate. Their natural environment is the rivers in northern Europe where the water is cold with high levels of dissolved oxygen. For this reason it is vital that the pond has an adequate filtration system and moving water, in warm weather it may be necessary to increase oxygenation with an air pump or fountain.
Sterlets cannot swim backwards, so ensure there is nowhere they can become trapped. Their spiny bodys can become entangled in Blanket weed, so ensure the pond is kept free of this.

Sterlets feed from the pond bottom, and will struggle to eat and digest cereal based floating sticks. It is recommended that they are fed a specific Sterlet diet.
