Why test for nitrite?
High levels of Nitrite affect the fishes blood by reducing oxygen transportation. High Nitrite levels are common in newly set up aquariums. In well established aquariums it is rarely a problem, although it can be caused by, vigorous filter cleaning, overfeeding, overstocking, stocking too quickly or an unnoticed dead fish.
